Aloha SHRM Hawaii Members,
Please join me in celebrating SHRM Hawaii as a recipient of the SHRM Gold Excel Award for our work in 2020. This is a national honor that we share with all of our members, volunteers, and speakers who helped the organization pivot during a challenging year and provide programs and activities to further the HR profession in Hawaii.

The three initiatives that helped us achieve this recognition include the Emerging Professionals Mentorship Program, now accepting mentors/mentees for their fifth cohort; our free webinar series “COVID Conversations”, which featured 9 webinars covering a variety of COVID-related topics including remote work, legal updates, and mental health and wellness; and our 2020 Hawaii State Conference that converted to a virtual conference and featured emcee Brook Lee, keynote speaker Robb Holman, and special guest speaker, SHRM president, Johnny C. Taylor.
While it’s great to be recognized for our past year’s accomplishments, I am even more excited by the programs and initiatives that we are working on this year. In my February article, I shared that our 6 standing committees and 4 Education Foundation districts were working on their 3-year strategic plans and I’d like to take this time to highlight just a few of the things that we are working on:
SHRM Hawaii Highlights of Strategic Initiatives
- Creation of a 3-day SHRM Certification Prep Class to launch in the fall.
- Preparations for the 2022 launch of our HR Executive Leadership Program, will enhance the visionary and strategic leadership capabilities of Human Resource executives of tomorrow.
- Partnership with CalSHRM to offer SHRM Specialty Credentials covering California Law, HR Department of One, Inclusive Workplace Culture, and Talent Acquisition.
- Cohort 5 of the Emerging Professional Mentoring Program scheduled to kick off in June.
- Engaging webinars and professional development opportunities from our Educational Foundation districts and committees on timely topics and HR trends including HR Basics & Essentials, Diversity Equity & Inclusion, Legal Updates, and Discrimination & Harassment.
- Planning for our 2021 Hawaii State Conference scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2021. In addition to a full-day virtual event, the team is considering a possible in-person activity as well!
- Continued monitoring and testimonial support during the state’s Legislative Session on a variety of HR-related topics including State Unemployment Tax, State Minimum Wage, and Mandatory Paid Family and Sick Leave.
You can review our full strategic plan by committee here. Should you have any questions about the plan or have ideas on what you would like us to focus on, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected].
