Happy 2023 and the Year of the Rabbit! 2023’s zodiac suggests it will be a “year of hope” and is predicted to be a fairly lucky year for most signs. And after the last few years, it’s safe to say we could all do with a lucky 12 months.
As we begin the new year, it is my honor to continue as your State Council Director and represent Hawaii at the national level. As an affiliate of SHRM, it is essential that SHRM Hawaii be in alignment with and receive all the benefits and resources offered by SHRM. As your State Council Director, I participate in three Regional Council Business Meetings annually where we discuss the latest issues facing HR, new and updated legislation coming out of Washington D.C., and key strategic initiatives including membership, certification, the SHRM Foundation (the philanthropic arm of SHRM), and the continued development and growth of our emerging professionals.
However, I am not the sole representative of Hawaii. I have the support of two additional professionals, our Field Services Director, Katie Slick, and our Membership Advisory Council (MAC) Representative for the Pacific West Region, Desiree Navarro. Desiree is new to the role this year and previously served as State Council Director of Montana. She has the added benefit of providing feedback directly to the SHRM Board of Directors and together the three of us work to be your unified voice.

Also, this year SHRM is celebrating its 75th anniversary. For 75 years, SHRM has helped shape workplace policies, unleashed pools of talent, championed Diversity Equity and Inclusion, cultivated better workplace cultures, and even spotlighted the employee mental health epidemic. This year’s national conference, SHRM23, will be held on June 11-14, 2023 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Registration is now open and I hope to see you there.
Should you have any concerns or suggestions that you want me to raise at the national level, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you.
Hau‘oli Makahiki Hou,
