Board Member Spotlight

Posted on Dec. 5, 2022  /   0

SHRM Hawaii would like to welcome one of our newest volunteer Board Members, “Tupu” Savaiigaea.  Tupu has worked as a Human Resources professional for over 10 years and is currently the Senior HR Business Partner at Aloha Air Cargo.   In 2022, Tupu served as a volunteer on the SHRM Hawaii Conference Committee and played a key role in executing another successful SHRM Hawaii State Conference.  In 2023, Tupu will serve as a volunteer Board Member as Co-Chair to the Conference Committee.

I sat down with Tupu to hear about her experience as a SHRM Hawaii volunteer.

What have you enjoyed most as a SHRM Hawaii volunteer?  I’ve been a member of SHRM Hawaii for about 5 years and over the years, my involvement has grown.  Initially, I would attend some of the professional development offerings, which I found to be a great way to network.   Now as a volunteer, I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing Human Resource leaders in our community which has provided me with additional mentoring opportunities.  I now have a network of HR professionals whom I’ve been able to build relationships with and am able to call when I face a challenge or am looking for advice.  These relationships and mentoring opportunities have allowed me to develop my career.

What I appreciated the most about being a SHRM Hawaii volunteer was how they took me under their wings.  I was the rookie on the Conference Committee and everyone was patient with me and allowed me time to learn my role.  After losing my father last year, the Committee was very supportive.  They recognized that I needed some time and understood when I wasn’t able to attend several meetings.  I’m extremely thankful for their support.

Can you tell us a little about the Conference Committee?   Our committee is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing the annual SHRM Hawaii State Conference.  We develop the theme, identify and select speakers,  solicit vendors, and manage all the details needed to make a successful conference, including arranging for lunch and making sure there are plenty of snacks.  We partner with other SHRM Hawaii committees, including the Membership Committee and the Marketing & Communication Committees.  We also rely on the other SHRM Hawaii committees to gather volunteers to assist at the Conference.

What does the Conference Committee have in store for us for 2023?  We received a lot of good feedback from the 2022 conference and we are taking these learnings and incorporating them into our planning for next year.  We are kicking off our planning sessions soon and are excited to be able to offer another extraordinary event next October.

How can SHRM members volunteer to be part of the Conference Committee?  If anyone is interested in volunteering, they should email [email protected] to get on our list.  We will be starting up soon so this is a perfect time to get involved.   I’m excited to be able to Co-Chair this Committee and would like to share my experience and offer mentoring to anyone looking to volunteer and who may be interested in becoming part of the Conference Committee.

Thank you, Tupu, for being an outstanding SHRM Hawaii volunteer!
