Aloha SHRM Hawaii Members,
Normally in my bi-monthly feature, I would share an update on the current trends in Human Resources or happenings with SHRM Hawai'i and SHRM national. However, this month I wanted to take the opportunity to pay tribute to one of our own, an incredible HR professional, SHRM Hawai'i board member, and Compensation guru – Carol Shimada – who passed away suddenly earlier this month.
In Memoriam

Carol Shimada
1959 - 2022
Since 2016, Carol served as the Director of Total Rewards for the Queen’s Health Systems. She also served as a SHRM Hawai'i board member since 2018 chairing the Executive Professionals and Global & Diversity committees, and for the last two years serving as Treasurer. Carol’s HR career spans nearly 40 years, primarily in Health Care and Technology across California with notable positions with Sutter Health, UC Davis Health Systems, Apple, and Hewlett-Packard. She was the subject matter expert for all things related to Compensation but also worked in other disciplines of HR including Recruitment, Employee Relations, Labor Relations, and HR Information Technology.
Outside of her professional success, anyone who knew Carol could not help but be attracted to her sense of humor or her ability to capture your attention with her stories – maybe of her latest escapade to Las Vegas or her fervor with K-pop and BTS!
Former Queen’s colleague and fellow SHRM Hawai'i board member, Susan Gray, shares, “Carol had an amazing sense of humor – irreverent, sardonic, and just plain sassy! She was also incredibly generous and supportive. I have so much respect for Carol as an HR professional, she was extremely knowledgeable and was a great mentor to others. I’m so lucky to have been her friend and I will miss her terribly”.
“Funny, nutty, and super buttery – those are words I would use to describe Carol”, says Mackie Jones, fellow SHRM Hawai'i board member. “She always put a smile on your face because she always wore one as she told you something funny about how proud she was of a fellow team member or one of her daughters. Nutty – Carol’s sense of humor was so contagious, that you couldn’t help but catch it. Although most of all, her infectious personality was so buttery you wanted to spread it everywhere and on everyone and everything. She will be missed.”
On behalf of SHRM Hawai'i, we extend our sincere condolences to her ‘ohana, especially her daughters, Brie and Kylie. A heart of gold, a smile of pure joy, a kindness that extended to all she knew, mahalo Carol for the impact you made in our lives.
