Job Description “Jargon” JigSaw

Posted on May. 6, 2022  /   0

Employers classify job titles as Seasonal, Temporary, or Casual hire positions which confuses college students to not apply for these “types” of jobs since they are uncertain what that means and do not understand the flexibility of what these job classifications might offer.

College students today enjoy the possibilities of working remotely and employers are trying to grip themselves with the boundary of what remote work life is, understanding the mix of metrics that combine productivity and accountability goals to meet the companies' bottom line. While students dream of an improved work-life blend, employers need to create a challenging work environment and adapt to the ever-changing workforce demands.

Branding, marketing, and imagery are all things corporate America tells us to be mindful of. So, what about changing titles that might entice a student through marketing, for example: What about, applying for a “Maui job, 12-week Paid-Internship position”, doesn’t that sound like a Temporary job posting? Is there a difference? Perhaps not, what’s important for a student is that these skills can be listed on your resume. As an employer, you would attract someone and have the same opportunity to assess a worker's skills.

As employers have difficulty recruiting, people are more apt to try new things, and perhaps classifying job titles differently could be a solution worth trying. Continue to adapt and create jargon to meet the pipeline of the next generational workers. On behalf of SHRM Hawai`i Maui Educational Foundation, members will be assisting with our community needs at the County of Maui and Non-Profit Government Job Fair hosted on Thursday, May 12th from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. Helping to get Maui’s community back to work, if you are on Maui, stop by the University of Hawaii Maui College Paina (Cafeteria) Building.
