We have seen increased mental health challenges stemming from the pandemic and everyday stressors. We've also seen numerous articles, webinars, and studies on the impact of remote and flexible work throughout the pandemic. Should organizations include flexible work as a part of their employee wellness strategy?
Studies going as far back as 2006 have shown the benefits of flexible work on employee well-being. A study conducted by the University of Minnesota found that employees with flexible schedules get more sleep, exercise more, cook healthy meals, and practice self-care. Remote and flexible work can also help reduce everyday stressors, such as commute time and school or daycare schedules. As a result, employees are more focused, productive, and energized!
How can Human Resource professionals guide their organizations to explore flexible work as a wellness strategy?
1) Guide leaders to think differently about the benefits of flexible or remote work by helping them to weigh the pros and cons for your organization.
2) Subtract to add: Think about what you can subtract through flexible work to add to overall wellness. For example, subtracting one hour of commute time adds one hour for employees to focus on their physical or mental wellbeing, by exercising, making healthy meals, or meditation, resulting in improved focus and performance.
3) Facilitate dialogue with focus groups about what flexible work looks like and how do you measure success from flexible work?
4) Initiate a pilot program incorporating flexible schedules or hybrid remote work. Consider a four-day, 9/9, or other modified work schedules. Permitting an employee to adjust their schedule by even just one hour could significantly affect an employee's quality of life.
As Human Resources professionals, your role in advocating and driving employee wellness is more critical than ever as organizations emerge from the pandemic with different needs and perspectives. It’s an exciting time to revamp and re-energize!
